Submesoscale soup (2021)
A poetic typology of ocean physics
This artist’s book Submesoscale Soup is an artistic response to physical oceanographic phenomena and is a collaboration between myself and scientist Jing He, Doctorate in Ocean Physics at MIT, Wood Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Inspired by the scientific illustration books from the turn of the century, the goal is to make science beautiful and accessible to a wide audience. However, unlike the books that inspired us, the science we explore what is not easily seen by the average person. The artists book collaboration aims to visualize the unseen beauty of ocean physics. This is due either to the large scale of the ocean currents or the processes hidden deep below the ocean’s surface.
