My artistic practice combines disciplines, navigating the realms of art, craft, design, and architecture in a constant exploration with each new project. Central to my exploration is a fascination with typologies—the intricate frameworks through which we organize our thoughts and categorize the complexities of the world.

In my multidisciplinary approach, whether working in design, artist books, or printmaking, I weave together elements, creating systems that strike a delicate equilibrium between the fortuitous and the planned. My abstract prints serve as captivating visual meditations, delving into the poetics of place and the nuances of color theory.

My work invites the viewer to wander through a world where the boundaries between intentionality and randomness blur, and where the poetics of place are eloquently captured in the vibrant shapes of color that fill each print.

I am a Professor Emerita in Design at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. My area of expertise is in color, book arts and printmaking. My work is represented in several collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art at the University of Richmond and the Yale Art Gallery, and in special collection libraries at Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, Oberlin College, Bowdoin College and the University of California Santa Barbara. She is a recipient of a Regional NEA award in works on paper and was a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome. She received the CBAA Exhibition Awards for my artist’s books.

I received an MFA in Design from the Yale School of Art and a BArch from School of Art, Architecture and Planning, Cornell University. I have also served as Assistant Dean of the College of Visual and Performing. She has been visiting artist and critic at institutions including MIT, Brown University, Harvard, RISD, Boston Architectural League and Mass College of Art and Design.

Research is always an integral part of my creative process. I delve into color theory, with a particular focus on the early 19th century when science and art converged. One of my main subjects of research is Michel Eugène Chevreul, a chemist from the 19th century. She meticulously experiments with his theories on simultaneous contrast, which elucidate how colors interact when juxtaposed.

In my creative practice, sketching with color plays a fundamental role. I begin by blending large color fields on paper, thus establishing my unique palette. These colors are then woven in to printing paper plates, providing me with a medium to compose my works. My inspirations often stem from textiles that explore various aspects of color theory. In my compositions, colors are juxtaposed, enveloped, or bordered by neighboring hues, creating color play and shifts.

My current series of prints and artists book revolves around the theme of local color. I explore how the color palette of the landscape undergoes constant change, influenced by weather, time of day, and location. Through my work, I capture color compositions that unveil fleeting moments in time. Local color, in this context, is derived from the geographical features, weather patterns, and the rhythmic transitions from day to dusk. These elements offer a rich source of inspiration for my exploration of color theory in situ.
